Federal authorities have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
