The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
