Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
